How to Style Your Ikea Side Table to Make It Look More Expensive

Whether you’re buying from Ikea to save money or because you like it, there are so many ways to upgrade your pieces that will genuinely make you (and others) forget it was so inexpensive to begin with! Here are some of our best tips:

  1. Add Books

Adding books - whether you’re reading them or they’re decorative - add an intentional way to share a bit about yourself. Touch on the rooms color pallet to really bring the room together. Books are ideal because they’re small enough to not overwhelm the smaller space but noticeable enough to elevate the pieces simplicity.

  2. Add a Lamp / Lighting

This can be a mix of aesthetics and function as having bed side lighting can come in handy to read, add some (less) harsh light than a ceiling fixture, etc. We opted for a small lamp as to leave space for function - be sure your lighting is proportioned to the size of your side table.

  3. Add a Basket (or any decorative yet functional storage piece)

We opted for baskets due to their height and ability to house things like chords or whatever our guests want by their bed to remain easily accessible. Other great options would be decorative boxes, bins or baskets. If you have an open drawer concept like ours, these become especially useful in storing items to keep things visually tidy yet still functional.

  4. Add a plant (real or fake!)

When in doubt, add a plant. Green always freshens up a space and frankly acts as a neutral. From small succulents to a tall yet small fig plant there really are so many great options to add something beautiful and decorative to your side tables.

  5. Keep it simple

At the end of it all, what elevates a piece like this is finding the perfect balance of lived in and aesthetically minimal. Utilizing these few elements will help you achieve that functional yet beautiful look. When in doubt, keep it simple.
