When it came time to decorating for spooky season this year, we made the commitment to really try a new style - style we’d been leading into all year that seemed difficult for halloween. In wanting to stick to light neutrals and minimal(ish) we started doing sourcing + research and found there weren’t many guides or tips on how to achieve the look. So, here we are hoping our dilemma + research can be helpful to you- neutral halloween tips + inspo to come!

GET INSPIRED

From Pinterest to Instagram, Magazines or other printed publications, looking and saving what other people have done can help you identify where you want to decorate on the spectrum of Halloween decor. Maybe you’re interested in a truly minimal look or something a bit more vintage and dark. The best part of a neutral halloween look is that it works within every decor style and brings out the best of each!

STAY ON BRAND

Whatever style you have in your home, it can be especially helpful to research [insert style] Halloween decor. Whether you’re into traditional, scandi or mid-century modern finding seasonal examples of decor in your favorite style will really help in getting the ideas + vision going!

PICK YOUR PALETTE

Before you even begin pulling out old decor or hitting the stores, you’ll want to settle on your palette. While true in nearly every design scenario, it’s even more so true with seasonal decor that figuring your pallet early on can make or break a lot. At this point, you know you’re working within neutrals which is helpful! Try to pick between lights or darks, whites, grays, blacks and browns + differing versions of them either warm or cool. Turning to your homes current palette can be a huge help. Whatever it is, be sure to stick to the rule of 60, 30, 10! This distribution - 60 being your main colors typically neutrals - 30 being an additional color seen mostly throughout but half as much as your 60 - 10 being your true accent with minimal pops through out - will help ensure your palette is cohesive throughout.

If you want a truly neutral look for halloween, consider the following:

  • 60: white/black + natural shades of gray/brown

  • 30: another version of your 60 with difference towards warm or cool tones + gold OR silver finishes/accents

  • 10: a natural or jewel tones color in pastels or “rusted” colors

SEE WHAT YOU HAVE

Unless you’re truly looking to drop some cash + start from scratch, it’s a great time to go through the Halloween decor you have and see if it fits in this new design style you’re looking for. If it doesn’t fit, see if it can perhaps be redone or DIY’d into new life! If you still can’t do anything with it, it may be the perfect time to head to Goodwill + re-home your spooky goods.

GO SHOPPING

With all your inspo, color palette and existing decor in mind, it’s time to go shopping! Before you head out, be sure to make a list of projects or sections of your home you want to decorate and what is needed to create the space of your dreams. Along with your list, don’t forget to keep photos on your phone of the looks you’re trying to achieve as an additional means of making intentional purchases that will truly bring the aesthetic you’re going for!

KEEP SHOPPING

I am guilty of it like anyone but often times in the stores (Home Goods or Vintage Markets being the exception) I try to buy all the things at once and end up impulse buying pieces that don’t really work in the space yet end up never being returned and it’s back to square one. When you are shopping, remember you can always keep shopping and sourcing- building your perfect Halloween decor kit over the months or even year outside the season.
